online TV & Movie content service launched to combat piracy 15 June 2010

FORMER ninemsn Head of Video, Jimmy Storrier, is launching an online TV & Movie content service to help curb the increasing trend of illegal downloading in Australia.

Mr Storrier, who left Ninemsn in March, formed Juno Interactive (www.junointeractive.com.au) with business partner and former Head of Media Production at Yahoo!7, David Morrison. The pair began work on the new online video service after realising the extent of the latent demand in Australia for paid, premium TV and movie content online.

"Australians illegally download more TV shows and movies than any other country in the world," Mr Storrier said. "15% of all people, globally, who downloaded the final episode of Lost illegally via torrents, were Australian. That's truly remarkable when you consider Australia is home to only 0.3% of the world's population."

PeSA 2010 summit for professional online sellers 05 June 2010

Pesa Australia Annual Conference - Melbourne

pesa

As an online seller, you're often so busy meeting orders that you rarely get the chance to step away and work on your business, not just in your business. Many sellers are also quite removed, working from home or in small teams, cut off from the larger business community.

PeSA Summit is a fantastic opportunity for all types of sellers - budding, growing and very experienced - to meet with others like them. It's also a rare chance to not only hear directly from big players like eBay, PayPal and Australia Post, but also meet senior people in these organisations and share your experiences.

PeSA Summit is in its fourth year in 2010. Each year we collect feedback from delegates that make the event even better.

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED 05 June 2010

FINALISTS ANNOUNCED – ONLINE RETAIL INDUSTRY AWARDS oria_online retail industry awards

After much deliberation and debate, the finalists for the inaugural Online Retail Industry Awards have emerged.

Congratulations to the shortlisted entrants who proceed to the final stages of judging, with one winner to be announced for each category, and one contender from all categories to be named Online Retailer of the Year for 2010.

For the entrants who missed out in 2010, be assured the judges faced some difficult decisions in nominating finalists but ultimately there were some standout qualities that distinguished the shortlisted entries. Overall, the judging panel was impressed with the calibre of nominations, and delighted to see some lesser-known names in the industry showing high standards of excellence.

“There were some clear themes which reflect the growing maturity of the industry in Australia,” said Andy Powell, Chair of the ORIA Judging Panel and Director of Multichannel, Deloitte.

“These included:

* Innovative business models in which simple and compelling customer value propositions are articulated and well-executed

* Online offerings targeting niche services or selling to the “long tail”

* Improving quality of customer experience in both look and feel and real customer service options such as click-to-chat and offline shopping support

* General focus on the credentialising of product offers through peer reviews, testimonials and community-generated feedback

"Looking beyond the obvious elements like useability, look and feel, and content quality, we have been seeking those entrants who demonstrated a sympathetic understanding of who comes to their business and why they’re there, and can translate that understanding into a compelling and enriching experience. As for the 'lesser known names' it just proves you don’t have to be big to be good ... ”

The first-ever ORIAs program will not only provide a standard for internet retailers to strive for, but will establish an important focus on what constitutes best practice and excellence in this industry. It’s a critical step in the development of an internationally competitive local industry.

“These awards allow us to establish a standard of excellence baseline against which developments in each of the category areas can be assessed at industry level going forward,” said Powell. “Put simply, the winners in each category will exemplify what others need to achieve to stay competitive, which will drive the advancement of the industry.”

The Gala Awards Ceremony for the ORIAs will be held at the Parkside Ballroom, Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre, Darling Harbour on Thursday 8 July at 7pm. Not only will it be an opportunity to celebrate the winners, it will be the single biggest social gathering of Australian and international retail influencers in this country ever.

Jargon free guides for those new to the web 28 May 2010

Jargon-free guides take pain and cost out of building a new, high-value website

Recent research shows that more than 54% of small businesses do not have a website. Based on that information, the Small Business Learning Centre (SBLC) - www.sblc.com.au - surveyed a number of business owners who had attended web and business workshops and found that the five things that put businesses off buying a website were:

1. Lack of knowledge of the web and the tools used would mean they could get ripped off
2. Too technical to manage and edit
3. Too costly to set up
4. Stories of businesses being left in the lurch by developers
5. Unsure of how to go about getting a domain name or web hosting organisedThe whole business of having a website is a conundrum made even more complex with a combination of what appears to be smoke, mirrors and a bunch of technical jargon.
