AIMIA to choose Australia’s best online retailer from these 20 contenders

Australia’s Interactive  Media Industry Association (AIMIA) will choose the nation’s best online retailer for its AMBER ecommerce awards from a list of just twenty contenders.

But there are some surprising omissions from the list, which may well diminish its potential marketing value and prestige for the winner.

Where is oo.com.au, or oztion.com.au or bigbrownbox.com.au for example?

Some of the candidates are also surprising additions, because they are not online retailers at all.

IMGsportstechnologygroup is a supplier of online shop and auction technology to sports clubs, whilst shopbot and myshopping.com are comparison shopping sites.

Likewise the addition of wantedshoes.com.au and activeskin.com.au are questionable, and particularly the former given that Google’s page-rank for the site is just 2 out 10.

(It may be just co-incidence that both sites were designed by Sydney web-developers Amblique).

And surely the list should have had ebay.com.au, rather than the US site at ebay.com

In any event the list of contenders, as revealed at the online voting site being run by market researchers, Coredata, is:

* abcshop.com.au

* activeskin.com.au

* badbacks.com.au

* bandit.fm

* champagnegallery.com.au

* citysoftware.com.au

* dealsdirect.com.au

* ebay.com

* fine-wine.com.au

* graysonline.com

* hoyts.com.au

* imgsportstechnologygroup.com

* jbhifi.com.au

* kidspot.com.au

* myshopping.com.au

* redbubble.com

* shop.bigpond.com

* shopbot.com.au

* swappler.com

* target.com.au

* ticketek.com.au

* tradingpost.com.au

* ticketmaster.com.au

* vetshopaustralia.com.au

* wantedshoes.com.au

As outlined in their  previous report on the AMBER awards, the top five in the online poll results will be evaluated for site usability, and a secret weighting of the two results used to determine the winner.

This list has no credibility whatsoever and Coredata should be embarassed.

Sportsgirl won the Australian website of the year last year and doesn't even feature. Witchery is another great site that has become the company's no. 1 store in terms of revenue. The new Officeworks site, whilst not brilliant, is a lot better than many of those above and as you point out, many aren't even retailers?!

Australian retailers deserve better.

Stewart I agree with your comments about some of the choices here. There are definitely some listings that are not true online retailers. I would be interested to know how this list of finalists came into being. I think the AIMIA needs to specify what its interpretation of an online retailer actually is so we can understand this better. Another point I need to explore is what are the criteria to qualify for this award.
