The ABS has released figures from the 2007-2008  Business Characteristics Survey (BCS)

Income from internet orders rose 20% to $81 billion

 

Summarised are the key statistics

24% of all businesses received orders via the internet valued at $81 billion
Receipt of orders


The proportion for businesses with 20-199 persons persons employed was 32%
The proportion for businesses with 200 or more persons employed was 29%
The proportion for businesses with 5 -19  persons employed was 29%

Web presence

36% of Australian businesses (includes businesses with a website, home page or presence on another entity's website.)


Broadband reinforced its dominance, with 94% of businesses with internet access having a broadband connection. There was minimal variation at the industry level, ranging from 88% to 99%.The proportion of all businesses placing orders via the Internet or web during 2007-08 was 43%. The ABS defines broadband as an 'always on' Internet connection with an access speed equal to or greater than 256kbps.
