Fast-growing Webjet Brings in CyberSource to Fight Online Fraud

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA, and SINGAPORE — May 17, 2010
CYBS Singapore Pte. Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of CyberSource Corporation (NASDAQ: CYBS), today announced that CyberSource’s Decision Manager anti-fraud solution has been selected by Melbourne-based, award winning online travelwebjet agency Webjet Ltd.

“We chose CyberSource because of their global experience in the travel industry,” said Richard Noon, Webjet’s CEO. “This, coupled with their professional approach and comprehensive solution, helped make our decision very easy. We expect CyberSource Decision Manager to help us deliver the best possible service to our customers.”

CyberSource’s Decision Manager can access over 200 validation tests and services to automatically review Webjet’s incoming online bookings. Decision Manager users can evaluate transactions from a number of perspectives, including single merchant purchase history, multi-merchant purchase history, device tracing, and global validation checks such as telephone number structure in over 100 countries. Using business rules set by Webjet’s managers, Decision Manager returns a recommendation to accept, reject or hold the order for review—all in a matter of seconds.

Webjet offers tickets and services for flights, car rentals, hotels and travel insurance. “We currently operate in Australia, New Zealand and have just opened in the USA,” added Noon, “As we expand, each country introduces its own particular fraud challenges and we want to get the necessary infrastructure in place well ahead of any expansion.”

Tim Sparrow, Head of Business Development, Asia at CyberSource, said, “Webjet needed an effective fraud strategy that could scale to meet its growth targets. We are glad to be part of Webjet’s eCommerce environment and look forward to supporting the growth of their online business. The work we are doing with Webjet furthers our presence in the Australasian marketplace and in the global travel sector, both of which are focus areas for CyberSource.”

Safe Online Buying and Selling

Great post.

Perhaps I can just add to this that the best way to guard against being ripped off by online sales or auctions of any kind, Craigslist and eBay included—and whether seller or buyer—is to use a *bona fide* online escrow company. Especially for pricier items like antiques, jewelry and autos. Although it does add some cost, it takes the uncertainty out of the transaction, and that’s a small price to pay for peace of mind.

For my money, the best bona fide online escrow (and there seems to be ten fraudulent escrow sites for every bona fide one) is probably Escrow.com (http://escrow.com). In fact, it’s the only one that eBay recommends, and is the only online escrow company that is licensed to provide escrow services all across the United States.

Take care,

Ulf Wolf
